A distressing event is categorized as a "trauma" when we experience two features--both a threat to our survival and extreme helplessness.  It can come from a rape, a victim of domestic violence, an automobile accident, seeing some violence, being a veteran, sexual abuse, or assault.  Other events such as surgery, invasive medical procedures or serious illness could also cause post traumatic stress disorder.  Your system might freeze  because the terror is too overwhelming to process in that moment.  However, if not relieved--the sights, sounds and smells are stored in our body's memory and will resurface later.

It happens mainly because in trauma we are "scared stiff".  The paralysis  and the physical/emotional shutdown comes to dominate a person's life and function.  Shame, depression and self loathing follow.  By suppressing powerful instincts, the consequences in our body take the form of back pain, headaches, high blood pressure, insomnia, and stomach problems.   And it can lead to a range of self-destructive behaviors such as alcoholism, drug abuse, irrational anger and irritability and poor decision making.   It takes a terrible toll on personal relationships.

To release the trauma there must be a combination of physical and emotional components.  This is what the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) commonly known as "Tapping" does.

Most important is that while undergoing the treatment, you do not have to re-live the pain of the trauma.   Sheila works with clients individually or in her Tuesday afternoon Stress and PTSD Healing Group.
